Devotion as a Way of Being

Returning to the River: A Reflection on Devotion

Each summer, I escape the intense Arizona heat and return to the place that shaped me—upstate New York, where the St. Lawrence River winds between green islands and quiet skies. Since childhood, this river has been my sanctuary. Its rhythm reminds me to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember the beauty that’s always present when we choose to see it.

This summer, as I sat in stillness by the water during my morning practice, I found myself reflecting on the life of the Christian mystic for whom the river is named—St. Lawrence. Known historically as a 3rd-century Roman deacon and martyr, his legacy extends beyond his courage and sacrifice. What moves me most is his devotion—not just as a matter of belief, but as a way of being.

St. Lawrence embodied love in action. His life was a practice of service—humble, daily gestures offered from the heart. This mirrors the path taught in Kundalini Yoga, which encourages us to transcend the ego and anchor into a state of heart-centered unity.

In this light, even the smallest acts—a kind word, a shared meal, a quiet offering of support—become radical expressions of spiritual devotion when done with pure love and no agenda. These are not just habits; they are soul-level choices that ripple into the world.

This is the essence of soulful leadership: showing up each day with presence, intention, and love at the center of what we do. Whether you're leading a team, raising a family, or simply navigating your own inner work—devotion is a powerful path forward.

Here’s to choosing love, one small act at a time.
